Where innovation meets nature in the heart of Singapore

“There are a lot of sustainability initiatives that have been introduced in the gardens, and what we want to do is make sure that our educational programs are able to carry these stories and spread these messages to our audiences.”

— Debbie Chen, Senior Assistant Director, Gardens by the Bay

A living classroom where urban design, biodiversity, and sustainability meet

Gardens by the Bay isn’t just a horticultural wonder, it’s a global showcase of how sustainable tourism, innovation, and education can flourish in harmony. Right in the heart of Singapore’s urban skyline, this 101-hectare green space blends nature and technology to create a living classroom, cultural icon, and climate-conscious visitor experience.

In this film, we follow Quak Wan Ling, a nature and sustainability tour guide who has spent over a decade guiding guests through the gardens’ diverse ecosystems — from solar-powered Supertrees to climate-controlled conservatories. For Quak Wan Ling, every plant tells a story, and every visit is a chance to connect people with nature.

At the heart of Gardens by the Bay’s operations is a closed-loop sustainability model. Its biomass-powered cooling system uses pruned trees from across Singapore to chill indoor spaces, while 1,700 solar panels and energy-efficient glass domes minimize emissions. Even the iconic Supertrees generate power, capturing sunlight like their real-life counterparts.

But Gardens by the Bay is more than an engineering feat. It’s a place where sustainability is brought to life through education. From post-exam scavenger hunts for schoolchildren to immersive tours for adults, the gardens host a range of programs that invite visitors to explore biodiversity, climate change, and conservation in action.
