Enabling Water Smart Communities

About the film

The UK is under growing pressure to increase housing supply while also grappling with water scarcity and flood risks. These challenges are becoming increasingly interconnected, and managing them requires a collective, integrated approach. To meet housing targets in a sustainable and resilient way, new developments must be ‘water-smart.’

This is where the Enabling Water Smart Communities (EWSC) framework comes in. Led by Anglian Water, Thames Water, United Utilities, ARUP, CIWEM, and academic partners, EWSC offers vital recommendations to ease the strain on water resources, reduce flood risk, and tackle water pollution. By following these principles, we can build the sustainable, affordable homes the UK needs, while also supporting green growth ambitions.

A standout example of water-smart development is Eddington in Cambridge, a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Cambridge Water, showcasing how sustainable housing can be delivered while prioritising responsible water management. Embracing these principles is essential for building homes that benefit both people and the planet.
