Regulating Electrification for a Greener Tomorrow

Mark Coles, Head of Technical Regulations at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), emphasises the importance of staying ahead of the evolving landscape of electrical regulations. As the sector shifts towards more integrated systems, such as solar panels, wind energy, and electric vehicles, professionals must be equipped to work across diverse installations. Coles highlights that the days of the “evergreen electrician” are gone; today’s electricians must stay up to date with the latest technology and regulations.

Regulatory changes can take years to implement, and installations often lag behind. Continuous professional development is key to ensuring the workforce is prepared for the future. Coles stresses that with the UK’s ambitious net zero targets, the need for up to 600,000 EV charge points presents a massive opportunity, but without proper training and preparation, this goal will be hard to achieve.

The industry must be future-ready, with installers prepared to meet new challenges and technologies. Coles remains confident that with the right training, investment, and incentives, the industry can rise to the occasion and deliver the infrastructure needed to reach net zero. However, failure to act now will only delay progress.
