Illuminating the Path to Net Zero

Andrew Eldred, COO of the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), underscores that electrification is central to the UK’s journey to net zero, and with it, the demand for electrical skills is rapidly growing. While the industry is responding with apprenticeships in England, Wales, and beyond, Eldred believes we are not yet meeting the full demand.

There are two key challenges to address. The first is apprentice opportunities, which could be improved by providing incentives for small businesses to take on apprentices . The second challenge lies in training provision. While there are strong training provisions in place, additional funding is needed to ensure that electricians have industry-agreed training and clear career progression within the field.

Eldred advocates for a multifaceted approach to entry into the industry; including apprenticeships and upskilling opportunities, which provide seamless transitions into the field. He believes that electrification will not only contribute to a more sustainable future but also generate well-paid jobs across the UK, with small businesses training local people at the heart of this transition. This will benefit both local communities and the nation as a whole.
