Building Careers and Shaping the Future of Health Information

Cecario Tyrel Guerrero, MBA, RHIA, Health Strategist and Educator, Texas State University and Saint Philip’s College

“Health information is the backbone of healthcare. We usually are behind the scenes, identifying opportunities, leading strategy, and impacting bedside care.”

Inspiring the Next Generation of HI Professionals

Tyrel Guerrero, MBA, RHIA, began his journey into health information unexpectedly. Starting as a chart clerk with a 1.0 GPA, he never imagined he would one day lead organizations, teach future professionals, and shape the direction of the field. Today, as a health strategist and educator at Texas State University and Saint Philip’s College, Tyrel is passionate about mentoring students and preparing them for careers that will evolve alongside healthcare itself.

For Tyrel, health information is not a single career path but a network of possibilities, from data analytics to quality management and beyond. He encourages his students to embrace critical thinking, question the status quo, and remain open to opportunities, reminding them that where they start may not be where they finish. Transferable skills, adaptability, and problem-solving are key to thriving in an ever-changing industry.

Looking ahead, Tyrel emphasizes that AI is a tool, one that, like a pencil, must be sharpened, used wisely, and adapted over time. He hopes to see HI professionals recognized at the forefront of decision-making in healthcare, influencing strategy, legislation, and innovation. By equipping students with the skills and mindset to lead, Tyrel envisions a future where HI is no longer behind the scenes but central to shaping better health outcomes.
