Green Horizons: A Workforce Fit for Tomorrow

The transition to a green economy isn’t a distant goal — it’s happening now. As industries across the UK work towards delivering a green economy, the demand for green skills is surging. A million people already work in the UK’s net zero economy, and it’s expanding rapidly while the wider economy struggles with slow growth. But the industry needs people now, across a huge range of roles, to maintain momentum, drive innovation, and deliver real change.

Launched in May 2025, Green Horizons is an ambitious digital series by IEMA (the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) in partnership with Content With Purpose (CWP). It explores the future of green jobs, the skills needed to thrive in this evolving landscape, and the professionals already making an impact.

Through insightful interviews and compelling short films, the series highlights the people, policies, and innovations shaping a more sustainable workforce. Whether you’re entering the field, upskilling for a greener role, or leading the transition within your industry, Green Horizons unpacks the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The series features contributions from leading organisations driving sustainable change, including Canal & River Trust, Arup, Egis, The RSPB, CWM Environmental, SRK, Center Parcs UK & Ireland, and BSI. Their involvement underscores the cross-sector collaboration required to build a resilient and skilled workforce ready to meet environmental challenges.

In addition, Green Horizons has benefited from the expertise of key collaborators:

  • Dhara Vyas, CEO of Energy UK
  • James Alexander, Chief Executive of UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association
  • Pamela Brown, Global Chief Marketing Officer, AIRA
  • Phil Stevenson, Professor of Plant Chemistry at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

The Green Horizons initiative complements IEMA’s ongoing work in developing sustainable career pathways, including the Green Careers Hub, a platform launched in 2023, which provides valuable resources for individuals seeking to transition into green jobs.
