Sustainable Salmon Enhancement in Alaska: Community, Conservation, and Catch
“It’s impossible to think of SSRAA as only benefiting fishermen… that money just spreads out throughout the entire community.”
— Russell Thomas, CEO, Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions
A Model for Responsible Salmon Management
In coastal Alaska, salmon are more than just a species — they’re a cornerstone of culture, economy, and ecology. This film highlights the work of the Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA), a nonprofit hatchery organization that has been supporting sustainable salmon fisheries for over 50 years. Through its hatchery-born, ocean-raised model, SSRAA releases millions of juvenile salmon each year into pristine waters around Ketchikan. These fish migrate, return, and support both wild stocks and the communities that depend on them.
Featuring voices from both SSRAA and the fishing community, the film shows how careful monitoring, habitat protection, and sustainable catch practices make salmon enhancement possible without harming wild populations. “We’re protecting wild salmon by enhancing opportunities,” says Research & Evaluation Manager Tessa Frost. With a funding model driven by a self-imposed enhancement tax and reinvestment from the harvest itself, SSRAA is helping ensure Alaskans can rely on salmon, year after year, and generation after generation.
This unique model of salmon enhancement is drawing attention as a replicable framework for responsible fisheries management across the globe. By aligning economic incentives with ecological stewardship, SSRAA is demonstrating how community-led hatchery operations can support thriving commercial, sport, and subsistence fisheries, like Sportfishing Expeditions. As climate change and environmental pressures continue to challenge marine ecosystems, the organization’s long-term commitment to sustainable salmon management offers valuable insights for fisheries resilience and food security worldwide.
