Adapting to Change: Responsibly Sourced Seafood

“Partnering with MSC would be a really great opportunity for anybody who is interested in making their fishery sustainable.”

— Marsha McVey, Corporate Director of Retail Sales and Marketing, Sea Watch International

How Sea Watch International and MSC Are Building a More Sustainable Future for U.S. Shellfish

Clam fisheries on the U.S. East Coast are facing shifting tides, literally. As ocean temperatures rise, surf clams are moving into habitats once dominated by ocean quahogs, creating new challenges for fishers and regulators alike. But thanks to science-based partnerships, the industry is adapting.

In this film, we go behind the scenes with Sea Watch International, a family-run operation with deep roots in the shellfish industry, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), whose rigorous certification process is helping guide fisheries toward long-term sustainability. Together, alongside Rutgers University scientists, they’re working towards a future where seafood remains a viable, abundant, and responsibly managed food source.

Through data collection, collaborative research, and certification, the clam and quahog fishery is becoming an example for how commercial fisheries can be responsibly managed.
