How Alabama Connects Fishing and Conservation

“The more you fish, the more you appreciate the things around you while you’re fishing.”

— DaKendrick Patterson, Biologist, DaKendrick Patterson, Biologist Aide, ADCNR’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division

Fishing for the Future: Conservation Through Recreation

From community lakes in rural areas to fish hatcheries and endangered species recovery centers, the fisheries management work of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources both sustains fish populations and promotes recreational fishing. In this short film, we meet the fisheries professionals leading those efforts, including DaKendrick Patterson, who grew up fishing Alabama’s public lakes, and the teams conducting species reintroduction and watershed restoration.
Their message is clear. Fishing license sales, conservation themed license plates, and public engagement not only promote outdoor recreation they are essential to funding statewide conservation efforts focused on biodiversity, improving water quality, and connecting more people with nature.
Through promoting public investment in sustainable fisheries management and awareness of the state’s conservation efforts, Alabama is simultaneously securing its fish populations, restoring habitats, and increasing access to outdoor recreation. This work enhances the state’s aquatic ecosystems and ensures future generations can continue to enjoy access to quality fisheries throughout the state.
