A comprehensive lifestyle medicine program supporting type 2 diabetes remission
The Permanente Medical Group
“When clinicians realize how this is really science-based and data-driven, it’s hard to ignore, and it’s hard not to get it out to the patients.”
— Allison Collins, MD, pediatrician and director of lifestyle and culinary medicine, The Permanente Medical Group
Intensive lifestyle medicine that empowers sustainable change
At Kaiser Permanente, lifestyle medicine is integrated into clinical care through programs such as Pivio 2 Thrive. Designed to support people living with chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes, the program offers classes, group series, and intensive pathways that help participants build sustainable habits grounded in evidence-based lifestyle medicine.
For Arlene, the journey began during a period of significant life transition, including a diabetes diagnosis. Faced with overwhelming and often conflicting information online, she sought structured, medically guided support. Through group sessions, cooking classes, and lifestyle education, she gained practical tools to reshape daily routines, learning not only what to change, but how to implement those changes consistently. The group setting fostered connection and accountability, reducing isolation and building confidence.
Kaiser Permanente emphasizes that lifestyle medicine is science-based and data-driven, delivered by one of the largest concentrations of lifestyle medicine board-certified clinicians in the world. The goal extends beyond short-term improvement: participants are supported in making long-term, sustainable shifts that can improve metabolic health, reduce reliance on medications when appropriate under medical supervision, and, in some cases, achieve remission of type 2 diabetes. For many, the transformation is not only physical, but deeply mental and emotional, restoring confidence and a renewed sense of agency.
