Integrating lifestyle medicine and advocacy into occupational therapy education

Having to be a translator and an advocate for my parents at such a young age made me realize that advocating means being a voice for somebody, and I think it’s very important for the population who have chronic conditions that they are being listened to.

— Ana Melchor, occupational therapy student, Keck Graduate Institute

Preparing occupational therapists to address chronic disease through lifestyle medicine

At Keck Graduate Institute, lifestyle medicine is woven into occupational therapy education to strengthen how future clinicians support people living with chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes. Ana, a student in the program, has learned how daily habits, routines, and environmental factors influence disease progression and how targeted behavior change can improve long-term outcomes.

Within the occupational therapy doctorate program, lifestyle medicine is not treated as an abstract concept, but as practical application. Faculty emphasize habit analysis, routine redesign, and culturally relevant care strategies that help individuals translate knowledge into sustainable action. This connection between occupational therapy and lifestyle medicine allows clinicians to bridge the gap between understanding what needs to change and actually implementing those changes in real life.

Ana also brings personal perspective and community focus to her training. Through work centered on chronic disease prevention and culturally responsive programming, future practitioners are prepared to advocate for populations disproportionately affected by diabetes and other chronic conditions, a perspective she understands all too well from having to assist her parents from a young age. By equipping occupational therapists with tools to address the behavioral drivers of disease, the program supports a broader shift toward prevention, patient empowerment, and whole-person care.
